Offshore/Inshore Salt Water Fishing
in Southwest Florida
Some of the greatest backbay saltwater fishing in Florida is located in the Southwestern hemisphere of the sunshine state. Backcountry fishing, or commonly called backwater/backbay fishing, is fishing that is practiced in the surrounding mangrove islands, bays, and estuaries that dot the aquatic landscape of Southwest Florida. Native salt water fish are attracted to the southwest region of Florida because of the surrounding environment that provides them with food and shelter near the many shallow seagrass flats and beach shores that surround the peninsula of Florida.
Redfish, snook, spotted seatrout, and tarpon are the most commonly fished species found in Southwestern Florida waters, and are primarily sought out by anglers fishing on charters in the area. Southwest Florida fishing is unique because the surrounding salt water bays and mangrove estuaries are free of pollution and allow for a more self sustainable environment in which allow fish and other species to survive and thrive. Plus, federal legislature, as well as Florida legislature, are very aware of the need to preserve and keep our natural habitats clean and healthy for the sake of animal species, as well as human species. The state and federal governments have put into affect many laws that section off certain estuaries and wetlands to be aquatic preserves, maintaining the natural serenity that comes with the beautiful locale. The region from Charlotte Harbor to Pine Island Sound is one of the largest estuaries in the state of Florida and several extensive sections of this area have been designated as preserved land tied with strict regulations that protect the quality of the surrounding water, as well as protecting the marine life that live in the water.
Rookery Bay is a preserve between Naples and Marco Island, and the waters from Marco Island that flow into the upper part of the Ten Thousand Islands are also designated as aquatic preserves.
